Racing with the Sun
G. Edward Griffin

Will you survive the solar storms ahead?

What? Another mind-boggling threat? With the looming collapse of the economy, the loss of personal freedom, pollution of the environment, and genetic destruction of natural foods (to name just a few), don't we have enough to worry about? Do we really need to speculate about a return to the Dark Ages caused by loss of the world's power grids? As one person wrote to me a few days ago: "Why breed more fear into a society already saturated by a government obsessed with using fear as a manipulator?"

The answer to that question is that it depends on whether fear is based on a real threat or on misinformation. Fear is an instinct for survival, and it's a handy thing to have when needed. If you wake up in the middle of the night and see your bedroom wall on fire, fear is your friend. Without fear, we would have perished long ago.

It is true that, if fear is based on misinformation, it can be used by politicians to exploit their followers. However, if fear is based on a realistic appraisal and if we are not paralyzed by it, it motivates us to take effective action. The issue, therefore, is not fear itself, but the validity of the facts on which fear is based.

Those who think we are just "breeding more fear" when we speak of X-class solar storms obviously do not think there is a real threat. The gentleman who wrote the previous statement confirmed that when he said: "I think that this scenario is not all that practical."

Although most of those who responded to the original report on Racing with the Sun share our concern, there are some who are not convinced, and I can understand that. There has been almost zero coverage of this issue in the mainstream media. I was surprised at how much information is available on the Internet but, as is often the case, you have to hunt for it. So, for those who may think that this is an off-the-wall theory with no credible support, here are a few references to consider:

"It would literally paralyze all the United States, not just for a day or an hour, but for months to years."
~~ Michio Kaku, Professor of Theoretical Physics, City College of New York

"We didn't realize the potential for geomagnetic storms being a source of power-grid outages to nuclear plants. We could have hundreds like Fukushima at the same time."
~~ John Kappenman, Principal Investigator, NAS Severe Space Weather Study and member of the U.S. Congress EMP Commission

"The likelihood of a severe geomagnetic event capable of crippling our electric grid is 100%"
~~ Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, ranking member of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Cyber-security, Science, and Technology. (Note that this is not the Department of Homeland Security but a Congressional committee whose purpose is to examine issues relating to homeland security.)

"Severe geomagnetic storms have the potential to cause long-duration outages to widespread areas of the North American grid."
~~ North American Electric Reliability Corporation and the US Department of Energy, High Impact, Low Frequency Event Risks to the North American Bulk Power System (June, 2010)

Summary: Eventually, possibly within the next decade, Earth will be hit by a solar burst that will knock out the world's power grids for months or years.
~~ Severe Space Weather Events: Understanding Societal & Economic Impacts, December 2008, National Academy of Sciences in collaboration with NASA

Although I was skeptical at first, now I am firmly convinced that the threat from X-class solar storms is real, that fear is a healthy response, and that the way to eliminate fear is, not to deny that the threat exists, but to take effective action to remove the threat. Here's how:

Governments can require the construction of devices to protect the grid when storms occur. Such devices can be built at reasonable cost, but political resolve will require public awareness and activism, and ...

There are ways to minimize the danger to ourselves and our families should these devices not be installed in time.

That's what Racing with the Sun is all about.
